Quilts as Coat & Skirt

Fashion’s made with quilts are the hottest trends on the runway. Many designer are exploring the use of quilts for a classic american look. The new life of many old quilts is so exciting.

Quilt was purchased at a thrift store. Denim sleeves.

So you can see quilts everywhere from Dior patchworked dresses and Coach with their quilt applique’ tops. If you have a quilt you carated or you have vintage quilts you can create a fashion statement with them. Ralph Lauren has an example of a quilted jacket.

I first start with a basic pattern that fits great and then I go from there. I love it when I have a quilt that I have purchased or that has been given to me that speaks to me. If you have more than enough quilts at your home think about sewing a jacket with the next quilt you produce.

Boys love to Sew

One of the best workshops I have ever been apart of is this workshop when I was teaching boys to sew. Some of the top tailors today are men, and sewing teaches skills that all boys need to know. What an amazing time they have working with all the great fabrics and sewing supplies.

Boys Sewing
Learning to sew for the first time.

Workshops for youths are a great way of introducing boys and girls to sewing. In each workshop, the participatence will create a custom project. Birthday parties, youth groups, girl scouts, boy scouts, etc are great groups for this kind of workshop.

Denim Vest & Cross Stitch

This jacket was designed from my desire to create a vest with my name on the back like the letterman’s’ jackets you purchase in high school. Created with cross stitch on the back and embroidery freehand stitching using fabric from Ghana. I used my traditional and modern touch to create this vest. The lady on the back is symbolic of my great-grandmother. She had a garden and farmed for a living in Ponchatoula, LA.

Cross Stitch is so much fun and I started this project years ago and it was framed for years. After I not longer wanted to have it as a picture I wanted to repurpose it into a garment. This vest is so much fun to wear. The embroidery threads I used were from weeks dye works I so love the way the threads stitch and pull through the fabrics.

The other stitches on this vest are all created by hand. I created the pattern which surrounds the cross stitch fabric. The front of the vest displays stitching by hand.

Fun with Jeans

As a mother, I love wearing jeans because they are durable, comfortable, and cool. Lately, my design inspiration has centered around jeans and recycling them into must-have items.  It’s hard to find a pair of jean pants that fit you like a glove but feel like a robe. Magical jeans like that need updating from time to time. Or maybe your 3rd child has finally grown into their hand-me-downs. The jeans are gently used and a Sashiko stitching can revamp the hand-me-downs to a hand-me-up. This summer I see jeans everywhere. Mostly because I am designing for my family and clients. However, jeans are a staple for summer and this trend is some much fun and can be worn by babies, teens, and seasoned women alike. Please show what creative pieces you are making out of jeans in the comment section. This blog is about sharing my inspiration and passions with others and getting inspiration from YOU. Let me know what you think. You can design your own Sashiko stitching pair of jeans or mail them to me and I’ll design an original look just for you.

When you have time look around your house and see what you have laying around that can be repurposed. The above pictures are just what I could find around my house and what a change I was able to make.

Where do you start? The best way is to just dive in and start with the best fitting garment you have for yourself or a family member. Start with adding a few stitches and fabric from the collection I know you have.

Squam Winter Retreat

Creativity as a way of life…. I am so excited to anouse that I will be teaching sashiko at the winter Sauam retreat in September 2020.

During the retreat in my workshops, you will learn about the tradition of Sashiko. Different threads used to produce different looks.

As you can see the sampler is just perfect for long fall days where you are able to sit and relax watching the sunset on the lake.

Hand stitching is relaxing and can become very addicting.

Using the two colors white and blue you can see the very simplistic feel of the patterns.
