Great fun learning the art of Japanese dyeing that involves folding, twisting or bunching of cloth and binding it, then dyeing in indigo.

Shibori is an ancient Japanese dyeing technique using natural dyes, and in this class you will use natural indigo, which antibacterial properties and has been used abundantly throughout history around the world. Learn the fundamentals of this timeless pattern-making process. We will concentrate on folding, tying, and using clamp resists, and dye in a plant-derived indigo vat. All dye materials and several pieces of cotton will be provided.

I am a passionate teacher who encourages students to create unique fabric creations, whether the end product is a quilt or garment. Creating what is important to the maker is a joyful experience that I try to pass on in my workshops. Wherever you are in your design process my goal is to inspire your creative “genius” and improve your techniques.

Please join me at one of my local classes or suggest that your guild hire me for a lecture and workshop.

Monday Night Sew ~ McCalls

From Formal to Fun
This pattern here is shown as a formal. I used denim and a quilting pattern for the top. This works for me and my style. What about you?

Check out the use of light and dark denim.

Here I am at Market in Houston. Check me out!

IMG_0074
It all started with a pile of denim and I deconstructed them. The next step is to sew a pattern with you denim. Then I took the denim I had sewn and placed the top pattern on top as the instructions indicate. Sewing is easy just like you were using a fabric.

Tuesday Tip ~ My Denim Creation

When creating with denim, try mixing different colors of repurposed denim and new denim for a bold effect.

img_0264
Deconstructing jeans for the denim is always fun. You must start with sharp scissors. The brand I use is KAI 7300 from Japan. They are made of high-carbon stainless steel.

I use a mix of old and new denim in my quilts and other creations.

Here is a tip: when creating with repurposed denim, use different colored denim and see what kinds of patterns you can come up with. I had so much fun working with contrasting black denim and blue denim. I used pale purple embroidery threads for the hand stitching.
